Katarina Witt began to ice skate when she was five years old. Her talent soon became obvious and she was accepted into a school specifically designed for kids with a flair for sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. The coach Jutta was also there. Her breakthrough year was in 1982, when she placed second in the World Championships in Copenhagen. Then, she was winning the competition with the grace and elegance she displayed. Olympic success At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt fought hard in a tightly battle to take home the women's figure skating gold medal. She won a much closer race after four years. Free skaters lost however she was awarded the gold medal for the figures that were compulsory and the short program. Witt became the first woman to take home a gold medal in both male and female figure skating since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt was allowed to resume skating following her successes as a film actress. Witt competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. While she was not able to win a medal, Witt enchanted her audience despite placing seventh. Witt was inducted to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in the year 1995.
